Cultural portraits

Writer's picture: Robyn JeanRobyn Jean

Culturally sensitive portraits, bringing out the spirit in you. I spend a lot of time working for not for profit organisations capturing their cultural events. As an Aboriginal photographer I bring to each photo shoot my respect, care, and connection to Country. Wes Jackson is now a part of the team and he brings his

cultural understanding and respect too.

Have you ever wanted to have your portrait taken that makes you proud of your culture and who you are?

You have come to the right place.

Wether you want an outdoor location, somewhere that has special memories or

cultural ties, or in my studio (or a hired studio if you have a big mob to photograph.)

Cultural Portrait mother and baby

This image of mother and baby is one of a series taken in the South West Western Australia. Capturing the loving bond between mother and child takes patience and time, My job is to make you feel comfortable and confident. It is important to me that you trust the process and enjoy the photoshoot and the amazing photographs.

You can choose to have a photograph in my studio. It is comfortable and there are lots of scarves and clothes to choose from, or you can bring your own. It is always a good thing to have a few changes of clothes and colours to choose from so we can try different things (it is fun!)

Post edit to create a dream style portrait thinking about the past

If you would like a photograph with an Aboriginal tool such as a coolamon we can do this. You can bring your own or use the ones in the studio. I can create unique photographs of you with my art skills in photoshop. You can talk to me about your ideas and I can bring them alive.

Studio portrait experience is something else. I remember the first time I went to a professional photographer's studio, I was nervous, excited, anxious and felt a bit silly. The photographer made me feel at ease and their confidence rubbed off on me and I can honestly say the experience was amazing.

In the quiet studio without distractions you can feel comfortable without other people looking at you (well except me and maybe a second shooter)

Outdoor Cultural portrait
Self portrait showing grief outside a church for Stolen Generation

Outdoor portraiture is another way to create a story about you. This one is a self-portrait I took in front of an old church at Wundowie, previously at Mogumber.
